(Manly).

Something silly happened in NSW right on NY eve. Almost all beaches have been closed – lifeguards raised signs “no swimming” almost everywhere. Some say surf was up to three meters high, which is quite scary.

We did not believe when TV said that beaches are closed and decided to check it out by ourselves. It has proven true – the waves were so high that well-know Narrabeen rock pool was more suitable for surfers than swimmers.

Just believe me, it looks tremendous right there.

It is not a big secret that what is bad for swimmers is good for surfers – so-called “sharks’ breakfasts” have just flooded the sea – next to the pool there were around 30 surfers despite sun almost gone and eight in the evening. And, I finally understood why water parks so popular in Finland, for example, where water park or at least a pool with a couple of slides or tubes can be found in almost any village, are not known in Australia – after real two-meter waves in the ocean soaking in a chlorine-contaminated pool with artificial waves generated by machine looks a bit fishy.

Sea foam is not what you often see at beach side of the rock pool. Tidal waves gust go over the while pool, covering the walkway and creating a waterfall at the other side. And, as I expected, this quite rare event attracted dozens of photographers – yesterday there were more people with cameras on tripods than swimmers in water! I bet they were after some nice shots of a storm in a pool with sunset (and, probably sunrise too) as a background.

Among many things I like in Australia there are some that I just excited about. For example, native Australian fauna. At first, it seems to me that the biggest and most widely spread Australian predator has a habit to laugh very loudly on mornings and is only dangerous to some insects, small lizards and stuff that people try to burn on BBQ (well, this is on ground. In the water things are not that great and it is not necessary to dive in the ocean in search for the main character of “Jaws” movie, on the north of the continent even fresh water ponds may be contaminated with something very alive and not less toothy than shark; I will come back to them later). At second, animals here still have not picked up a habit not to show to humans what puts a big question mark on the idea of going to the Zoo in order to satisfy the obsession to see Australian natives – possums nightly pass through even in areas where population density is very high, kookaburras laugh at 4am right next to the open window of bedroom, even koalas can be spotted while you are doing the bush walk. Moreover, rare spices from of rare kind of monotremes – Echidnas – still can be found in one of many Sydney’s national parks.

But let me talk about kangaroo. After a short lunch at Cambewarra lookout, we headed further south with an intention to have a dip at the famous Pebbly beach, which is situated in Murramarang national park near Ulladulla. Hope this information is sufficient should any traveler have an interest in visiting this place. In the meantime, I will try to explain what is it so special about this beach.

One famous once said something like “a picture worth thousand words”

Yes, you’re right. Kangaroos live there. They have sun baths right next to holidaymakers and look as cool as cucumber and did not show any signs of being disturbed by that bald tailless kangaroos with IPods – we almost stepped on this phlegmatic as we were looking for any kangaroos hiding in the bush.

Judging how well the land is manured around, estimated number of kangaroo permanently residing there must be close to ten. Or even twenty. What I am sure is that their only concern about people surrounding is whether they have any apples or anything not less delicious to spare. There is a big camping site in the bush, which kangaroos immediately started to get benefits from. And they are not alone

These colorful guys tends to rob newly arrived holidaymakers even before they get out of the car and have a look around. They do not like bananas, as we discovered while we were trying to buy off being attacked by them; they sit on one’s shoulder and demand something more attractive.

Bananas are good for this handsome

Pretty usual bird for these places, but it usually holds from close encounters of the third kind.

I would like to advise those who want to visit this place to arrange a good navigator which reads maps and drink beers – there is no highway going straight to the beach, unsealed road to it joins Princess highway at the most unexpected place where you most likely would be doing 100 km/h but even if you happened not to miss the turn, fashionable gadget with words GPS on the face, three-digit price tag and millions of voices to chose from can entertain you with some funny directions like asking you to turn right where on your right will be anything but what you could even thing about to turn to.

To be continued…

Sometimes in the evening we go for a dip to Narrabeen rock pools. Just like today, but today we saw it. There is nothing unusual for ship to stay at anchor somewhere nearby except this one was too close to the beach and I even thought its crew was seeking Pasha Bulker’s fame. Hopefully, it was close, but not that much.
Unfortunately, I did not have DSLR camera with me.. actualy, I don’t have DSLR at all, but this time the only I had was mobile cameraphone Nokia N95. That’s what I got:

Surprisingly, this mobile phone takes quite good photos. For mobile phone, of course. In any case, its wide-angle lens does it worst and ship on the photo looks smaller than it seemed then.

This looks almost like panoramic photo (it is just a cropped one indeed):

BTW, real photographers with real cameras did not hesitate – try to spot one some left from the middle of the photo above

This one looks almost like a toy shop:

Sunset at North Narrabeen is always spectacular. Even mobile phone can handle it
